Yes, we said floor mats. As part of their "Green Plastics" initiative, "Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC)...has developed a new floor mat made using plant-based bio-polyethylene (bio-PE) fiber to add to its lineup of proprietary 'Green Plastic' products."¹ Other products include wood-based phenolic resins, and interior surface materials constructed from traditional plastics and cotton fibers.

The fibers that will find their home in the floor mats are constructed from plant-based resin (from sugarcane molasses), and are wrapped in a normal petroleum-based polypropylene sheath, which allows them to meet the performance standards of traditional floor mats. Production and testing is set to begin shortly, according to a press release from the automaker, as early as summer 2012.
